Patton Mansion

Project Description

University of Virginia
Charlottesville, Virginia

The property is located on West Main Street adjacent to the University medical center.  The historic mansion and garden were preserved and renovated as part of a medical building project that embraced the City’s streetscape and urban design goals for Main Street.

We designed the brick retaining wall in order to elevate the garden to street level and to provide foot access to the medical building behind. The central lawn was placed to anchor and activate the garden space and a perimeter walk invites both employees and pedestrians to enter and pause for a moment of respite.  Working within a restrained budget required the use of scored and colored concrete pavements. Furniture includes teak benches and cast iron light fixtures. Resilient groundcover, shrub, and tree plantings form a strong edge along the street, create gateway conditions, provide shade and scale to seating areas, and reinforce organizational geometries.
