North Park

Project Description

Waynesboro, Virginia

Working closely with City staff and surrounding neighborhood stakeholders, we developed a master plan to transform a neglected and vandalized open space into a heavily used community park. Planning priorities included strengthening neighborhood ownership, enhancing safety conditions, upgrading recreation facilities, and restoring environmental systems and ecologies.

A prominent new pavilion, playground, and little-league baseball field combine to create a new welcoming park identity.  Consolidated and centralized parking successfully addresses neighborhood safety and loitering concerns. A meandering greensward and river levee walk invite play and exploration and also function as important organizing features. Additional programmatic elements include a future greenway connection to the downtown area, sand volleyball, basketball, a dog park, walking trails, native wildflower and rain gardens, and river access improvements.
