Church Campus

Project Description

Crozet United Methodist Church
Crozet, Virginia

New central grounds organize the renovated Church campus and provide a sacred outdoor realm for religious events, social gatherings, and Christian preschool activities.

The existing campus was completely altered and disrupted by the loss of property, pedestrian access and parking due to construction of adjacent public streetscape projects.  Highlighted by a church-wide, design charrette process, the master plan embraced an urban approach to parking replacement.  This strategy allowed the central spine of the campus to be completely transformed into a sacred pedestrian realm that organizes the site, the buildings, and the garden spaces.

Reconfigured front walks and lawns unify and activate the main entrances into the church and pre-school. A sheltered terrace and interwoven play ground anchor the back of the campus and collectively serve a wide range of church functions.  The plant palette and landscape design unify the site, provide shade and scale, and support traditional Christian themes and teachings.
