Accessible Fishing Piers

Project Description

Mint Springs Park
Albemarle County, Virginia

The universally accessible fishing piers provide important outdoor recreational opportunities for all, but especially those with physical disabilities. Working within the County’s constrained budget, the design was based on National Park Service construction traditions.  The piers were carefully located and positioned at the top of steep, rocky banks to provide convenient lake access.  Pier dimensions are based on wheelchair needs and specially designed railings accommodate wheelchair casting and reeling motions. Paved paths provide safe and convenient access along the lake’s edge and to a new vault toilet.  Construction was partially funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
